Why stay in your job more than 2 years to get paid less?

Do you know that the longer you stay in a job the less you get paid?

http://www.forbes.com/sites/cameronkeng/2014/06/22/employees-that-stay-in-companies-longer-than-2-years-get-paid-50-less/

We were brought up and told you  have to get a good education to get a good job. If you are a man this helps you support your family. If you are a woman this helps contribute to the  family’s budget.

Most people wanted a government job because it was easier and others opt for jobs in the private sector. The education system never hinted at having  your own business. Now job life is so stressful for some people that they want out. They want freedom to live a better life, freedom to have more time for family and do the things that they are really passionate about.

There are so many opportunities to have the life that we want, but we prefer to stick with the job, after all it provides security and do not forget the pension. So who said it was secure when everyday you hear of job cuts, even in the government and what about the pension, by the time you are ready to leave you can barely live on the pension.

Having your own business is not for everyone, someone has to do the work, but if, just if you have it in you to run your own business would you give it a shot?  I bet a lot of people would say no. You see we are people who like to stay with what we are familiar with. We afraid to go there, afraid to fail – what if something goes wrong? How am I going to live? How am I going to take care of my family?  I am accustom to getting paid whether I work or not. Little do we know that there are people who are their own bosses, no employees and do not have to worry about money. Check out these people below – they are their own boss, no employees and the money is flowing.

Diet Pills: Do They Really Work?

HI5 Lean

Diet Pills: Do They Really Work?
from HealthyWomen.org’s Obesity Health Center

Some do, some don’t—and it’s important to understand the difference. Currently, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved three drugs to aid long-term weight loss. They are: orlistat (Xenical and Alli), lorcaserin (Belviq) and phentermine-topiramate (Qsymia).

There also are many over-the-counter appetite suppressants and other drugs and supplements that promise rapid weight loss, but they have not proven effective for lasting weight loss, and some can cause potentially dangerous side effects.

The cornerstone of successful weight loss involves lifestyle changes, such as eating a healthful, high-fiber, lower-calorie diet, being physically active and modifying negative behaviors. Numerous studies prove the health dangers of excess pounds, so it’s important to try to achieve and maintain a healthy weight.

If you are among the nearly 70 percent of U.S. adults age 20 and older who are overweight or obese, the prescription weight-loss medications may help you get to a healthier weight. However, they won’t help everyone. Weight loss is a serious, long-term endeavor. Always discuss  your options with your health care provider or consult a registered dietitian.

No weight-loss medications should be used if you’re pregnant or trying to become pregnant. Some medications may be restricted if you are less than 18 years old or have certain medical conditions. Like most medications, weight-loss medications have potential side effects. None of the long-term weight-loss drugs is considered high risk for developing a drug dependence, but you should take care if you have a history of drug or alcohol addiction.

Here’s a primer on weight-loss medications:

  • Orlistat works by preventing your body from absorbing about one-third of the fat you eat. It can interfere with the absorption of fat-soluble vitamins, so you should take a multivitamin while taking orlistat. It can cause diarrhea, stomach  pain, gas and other gastrointestinal symptoms. These symptoms are usually mild and temporary but may be worse if you eat high-fat foods. In rare cases, orlistat may cause liver damage, so stop taking the drug and contact your health care professional if you notice any symptoms of liver problems, such as dark urine or yellowish eyes or skin. Xenical is the prescription version of orlistat, approved for adults and children 12 and older. Alli is the lower-dose over-the-counter orlistat. It is not approved for children. Do not take orlistat while taking cyclosporine.
  • Lorcaserin affects the chemicals in your brain that help decrease your appetite and make you feel full, so you eat less. It does not work for all people, so if you do not lose 5 percent of your weight within 12 weeks of starting the drug, the medication may not work for you, and you should talk with your health care professional about other options. Side effects of lorcaserin may include headaches, dizziness, fatigue, nausea, dry mouth, cough and constipation. If you are also taking an SSRI antidepressant or MAOI, ask your health care professional about the risk of serotonin syndrome.
  • Phentermine-topiramate combines two FDA-approved drugs. The phentermine suppresses appetite, but used alone, it is only approved for two weeks. By combining a lower dosage of phentermine with extended-release topiramate, the drug has been shown to be safe for up to two years. The medication comes in three doses: starting dose, recommended dose and higher dose. Similar to lorcaserin, it is not effective for everyone, so if you have not lost at least 5 percent of your body weight after 12 weeks on the higher dose of phentermine-topiramate, talk to your health care professional about other options. Common side effects may include tingling hands and feet, dizziness, changes in taste, trouble sleeping, constipation and dry mouth. Rare side effects may include allergic reactions, memory or mood problems, suicidal thoughts, vision problems and kidney stones. It is not recommended if you have an overactive thyroid gland, glaucoma or have recently taken an MAOI antidepressant (though it was safely tested with other antidepressants).

There also are several over-the-counter FDA-approved appetite suppressants that affect the brain chemicals that regulate your appetite. They include:

  • phentermine (Adipex-P, Oby-Cap, Suprenza, T-Diet, Zantryl)
  • benzphetamine (Didrex)
  • diethylpropion (Tenuate, Tenuate Dospan)
  • phendimetrazine (Adipost, Bontril PDM, Bontril Slow Release, Melfiat)

These medications have the potential for abuse and are only FDA-approved for short-term use of up to 12 weeks, though some health care professionals may prescribe them for longer “off-label” use. Side effects can include dry mouth, difficulty sleeping, dizziness, headache, nervousness, restlessness, upset stomach and diarrhea or constipation. Severe side effects may include chest pain, fainting, rapid heartbeat, shortness of breath, confusion and swelling in your ankles or feet. You should not take appetite suppressants if you have heart disease, high blood pressure, overactive thyroid gland or glaucoma.

These appetite suppressants, along with other over-the-counter remedies like diuretics and supplements, have not been found to be effective long term and some have been linked to serious side effects.

Some issues to think about before considering a weight loss medication:

  1. Your degree of overweight: weight loss medications are usually prescribed for people with a body mass index (BMI) over 27 who have additional complications, such as diabetes; or for those with BMIs over 30 without complications. BMI is a measure of weight status: people with BMIs from 25 to 29.9 are considered overweight; those with BMIs of 30 and above are considered obese.
  2. Your degree of success with other weight loss programs or methods.
  3. Your ability to comply with taking the medications and making long-term lifestyle changes.

Are you derailing productivity?

iStock_LowProductivityGraph_350

It’s in your best interest as a manager to ensure that your team is productive, but despite your good intentions, there are plenty of ways managers unintentionally stifle the successful workplace environment you’re striving to foster. Here are a few common ways your efforts to be a supportive manager may actually hinder your team’s productivity potential.

1. You don’t scrutinize meeting agendas. Though ensuring you have a relationship with the people you report to is important (nearly 55% of respondents to a Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM) Employee Job Satisfaction and Engagement survey said it was a key factor in the level of engagement they feel with their jobs), meetings aren’t the way to foster a connection among employees. To facilitate productivity, all meetings should have one defining purpose: to move further toward a defined and desired result.

Before a meeting, ask yourself:

(1) Is there an agenda?

(2) Does each item on the agenda have a defined and specific outcome that will lead to either continued momentum, and/or completion?

(3) Does each agenda item specify the amount of time and attention it will receive?

(4) Does each agenda item have an “owner” assigned?

(5) Are all the people who need to be involved in an agenda item available?

(6) Does everyone on the invite have a “place” on the agenda?

(7) Does the meeting end time coincide with the amount of time each agenda item will receive?

Lead by example, and encourage your staff to get in the habit of strategically scrutinizing every meeting for these criteria as well.  If every question above can’t be answered in the affirmative, consider alternative ways to communicate.

2. You force your way. Taking a “hands off” approach isn’t all there is to delegating; you must also be mindful about allowing employees to have a voice. “It isn’t about you, it is about the work,” says Dr. Jené Kapela, a leadership coach, consultant, and the founder of Jené Kapela Leadership Solutions. “Don’t be concerned that things get done your way —just that they get done well. Your staff members will do a better job if they can do things in a way that makes sense to them.” With that in mind, however, she says you’ll need to create opportunities for those discussions to take place—and keep an open mind about any approach.

3. You don’t confirm communication. Miscommunications usually aren’t revealed until a mistake occurs in the midst of a project, or until an employee hits a “roadblock” that causes him or her to seek clarification. By that time, countless hours of what could have been productive time are lost. To eliminate potential miscommunication, Mark Goulston, management consultant and author of six best-selling books including Just Listen suggests tweaking your language when you give direction. “Instead of asking ‘Do you have any questions?’ replace it with a phrase like ‘So that we are clear, please tell me what I have asked you to do, by when and why it’s important to what we are trying to achieve,’” says Goulston. Not only will repeating the information help the employee begin to process the task and reveal miscommunication before it’s problematic, you’ll gradually gain a better understanding of how to communicate effectively with the different personalities on your team.

4. You do more than one thing at a time. Though multitasking may seem like the only way to handle a demanding workload, it’s ineffective in terms of maximizing productivity. “Constant multitasking makes us more prone to mistakes, more likely to miss important information and cues, and less likely to retain information in working memory—which impairs problem solving and creativity,” says Maura Thomas, author of Personal Productivity Secrets. Further, she points out that it can lead to job unhappiness and undue stress among your staff. “In multitasking environments, employees work in reactive mode all day long; it prevents them from being proactive, and robs them of the opportunity to assess their overall workload and choose what to work on next.”

To encourage more single-task focus, remember that the team looks to you for the “right” behavior. Don’t take your smartphone into meetings, don’t check emails while you’re on conference calls, and establish a protocol for how “urgent” requests for information are to be handled. For example, you may instill a policy that when urgent needs arise, colleagues visit one another in person, versus sending urgent emails that make it impossible to temporarily disconnect from online distractions.

Nutrition Label Changes and you

If you are health conscious you need to be aware of this:

Nutrition Label Changes: What Would They Mean?
from HealthyWomen.org’s Diet & Nutrition area

For the first time in 20 years, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is proposing changes to the way that food nutrition is labeled. The labels were created to help Americans make better decisions about the foods they eat and to encourage healthy diets. If adopted, the new labels, with a new design, would include better explanations of nutrition science and updated serving sizes. Here’s what you could get from the new labels.

Better understanding of what’s healthy

The new labels involve some changes that make it easier for consumers to understand the nutrition information in relation to a healthy total daily diet. For example, the labels would require companies to list “added sugars,” which can decrease the intake of nutrients and increase calorie intake. Updated daily values for nutrients like sodium, dietary fiber and vitamin D would also be included. Potassium and vitamin D amounts would be required on all labels, because they are considered newly important for public health. Finally, the “calories from fat” measurement would be removed. Research has shown that the type of fat is more important than the amount, so just the types of fat (total, saturated and trans) and their amounts will be listed.

More realistic serving sizes

As you probably know, serving sizes can seem pretty arbitrary, and many are a lot less than what people typically eat or drink. For example, you’re probably not going to stop drinking a 20-ounce soda at the 8-ounce mark and call that one serving. The new labels will include serving sizes that reflect how much people typically eat rather than how much they should eat. Packaged foods and drinks that are usually consumed in one sitting will be labeled as a single serving, so the nutrition information is for the entire amount. Some that could be eaten all at once or spread out would include two columns: one for “per serving” and one for “per package.” This can give people a better picture of how many calories they’re taking in.

Easy-to-read design

The proposed changes would make the serving size and amount of calories on the label more prominent in big, bold text toward the top of the label. The Percent Daily Value measurement would be moved to the left of the label so consumers would read it first. The footnote about the Percent Daily Value would also be altered to more clearly explain the meaning of this measurement, making it easier for people to judge what’s healthy and what’s not.

The FDA is accepting comments on the proposed changes. If approved, it is not known when the changes will occur. If these proposed changes are made, they could have a significant positive impact on the health issues that many people in America face, like obesity, diabetes and cardiovascular disease.

Types of Foods to reduce Colorectal Cancer Risk

Foods to Reduce Your Colorectal Cancer Risk

vegetables in a market stall

It’s no secret that what you eat has a huge impact on your overall health. An unhealthy diet is a major risk factor for all kinds of diseases, from heart disease to cancer. Colorectal cancer—cancer that starts in either the colon or rectum—is no different. It’s the third most commonly diagnosed cancer and third leading cause of cancer death in women and men, so it’s important to understand what you should be eating to help reduce your risk of this condition.

Check out these good-for-you choices that may help reduce your colorectal cancer risk.

Fruits and veggies

Fruits and vegetables are the main players in any healthy diet. They provide you with great natural sources of the vitamins and minerals your body needs, as well as beneficial substances like antioxidants. Antioxidants help boost the body’s defenses against free radicals, which are byproducts of oxygen use that can damage cells through oxidization. Carotene, beta-carotene and lutein are common antioxidants found in fruits and veggies. Your best bets are foods like berries, carrots, citrus fruits and dark, leafy veggies.

Brown rice (and other whole grains)

The verdict is still out on how and if more fiber can help prevent colorectal cancer specifically; research has been inconclusive so far. However, increased fiber can improve health in general by moving wastes through the digestive tract more quickly. One study by researchers at Loma Linda University, published in Nutrition and Cancer, found that people who ate brown rice at least once a week reduced their risk of colon polyps—potentially precancerous growths—by 40 percent. This is because of brown rice’s high fiber content. Other whole grains can give you fiber too.

Lean protein and fish

Studies have shown that red meat consumption is linked to a higher risk of colorectal cancer. Processed, salted, smoked or cured meats should also be avoided. Instead, choose lean protein like poultry and eat plenty of fish. If you still want red meat on occasion, limit yourself to two small portions a week of red meat that’s a lean cut, trimmed of fat and not charred on the grill.

Legumes

Legumes were also part of the Loma Linda study, and eating them at least three times a week led to a 33 percent reduced risk of colon polyps. Peanuts, chickpeas, lentils, kidney beans and peas all count. Aim to get at least three servings a week, preferably more.

Ginger

A study published in Cancer Prevention Research by researchers at the University of Michigan Medical School found that taking ginger supplements for 28 days reduced study participants’ colon inflammation significantly. In prior studies, inflammation has been linked to colon cancer, and while more trials are needed, it seems safe to say that increasing your ginger intake isn’t a bad thing.

How to get involve in network marketing

Working on line and from home has become so competitive and sometimes it appears that everyone wants to become millionaires overnight.  They go from one opportunity to the other failing to realize you have to put in the time. The largest industry now is network marketing. This can go from working solely on line or both on and offline. You cannot work online if you are not involved in network marketing.

Network marketing is not your conventional job and as the name implies you have to network. Whether it is connecting with people on facebook , twitter or linkedin or buying leads you have got to network. There are people who work the business and they are millionaires.  Did I say work the business? Yes this is what they do every day.

As a result of being scammed by various on line money making schemes it is now a requirement that you must provide a product or service when offering any type of money making option. If you recall Zeek Rewards had a service about placing Ads but that still went belly up.  So, it is important that the company has a core business model.

By now if you have been in the network marketing field you must realize that the way to make money is in the numbers. That’s how you make money and how the company makes money.  E.g If I sell one service at $60 and suppose to get back $10, that $10 is not a direct payout to me; I only get a percentage of it based on where I am in the group. So I must sell 100 of these for it to make sense. On the other hand if I enroll reps I can get anywhere between $25 and $100 or even more for each rep. If they fall out I have already been paid. If 100 people pay $99 to enroll and 50% do nothing the company does not lose since there is normally no refund on enrollment.

 fire your boss

Why then would you want to work online and from home?  Freedom – is it time to fire your boss, because you are just fed up of having him/her over your shoulder every day. The frustration is just too much, too much office politics, too much red tape. What about those bills that have been following you  around, but you can’t find any money as yet to settle them? Then there is funding to start up your own business because you have been passionate about doing this for a long time. Whatever your reason there are still some seemingly genuine options that are available, but how do you know which one to select?

Below you will find some tips on selecting an online/home based money making business option:

–      Decide what is your why – why do you want to join this business – freedom, more time with family, just some cash to settle your debts, whatever your reason it must be something that will provide that impetus to take you through the not so good times.

–      Do your research – what is their industry and where are they in their particular industry. Have they been highlighted in various magazines, awarded any prizes – top ten or top one hundred fastest growing company. 400% or more growth in the last four years or close. What about their culture, how do they deal with representatives? Are they sound financially? Will they be around next year or next five or ten years? Do they have a well-orchestrated company strategy? You can easily find some companies to make some quick cash but there is no guarantee they will be around for the long haul.

–      Can you afford the registration fee? The more sound companies have a registration and/or a monthly fee.

–      Most networking companies require you to have at least two referrals to start the process. Do you have two people who are not only willing but would work the business as a team with you? Take it from me if you are serious about the business you need people who are also serious about the business. This is not a business where you get in and start vacation immediately and expect to reap the rewards.

–      Do you need storage for your products?

–      How much time do you have to devout to the business?

–      How are you going to get customers and market your business? If you have been in various networking groups before that did not work your best bet is to look outside of your family. They will come around when they see you progressing. Are you familiar with social media – facebook, twitter, linkedin? If you are working and plan to moonlight – then you definitely need to know social media.

–      What about training? Does the company have training and support?

–      Do you have the necessary tools – phone, text messaging, optimized website, webinar etc.?

–      What about payment options – do you have a credit/vtm or US Debit card? If you are delving into direct payment schemes you need to have a paypal/solid trust pay account and you need to have your credit card or vtm card linked to these accounts.

The above are just some of the issues to consider when you are looking for on line and work from home opportunities.

Feel free to add to it.

It’s not fair and it is unjust

It’s not fair, so this is your opportunity to get into the 5%.

The ball is in your court.

basket ball

Take 100 men and women at the start of their working careers and follow them for forty years until they reach retirement age, and here’s what you’ll find. According to the Social Security Administration:
• Only one will be wealthy

• Four will be financially secure

• Five will continue working, not because they want to but because they have to;

• Thirty-six will be dead;

• And fifty-four will be dead broke, dependent on their meager Social Security Pensions, relatives, friends, even charity for a minimum standard of living.

That’s five percent successful, ninety five percent unsuccessful.

It’s not fair.

Don’t you hate the fact that it’s all too easy to be one of the unfortunate ninety five percent who never make it? And yet you don’t want that to happen to YOU.

Is there anything worse than wanting to get ahead but because of ‘lack of knowledge’ you somehow can’t quite get started?

Don’t you hate it that through no fault of your own, your personal circumstances may be holding you back from earning the money that you really deserve?

It’s not fair and it’s unjust.

There has to be a better way. And there is.

This is your opportunity to be in the 5%

http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_detailpage&v=bqxzh28MVVI

One thing is for certain, my goal is to make YOU wealthy . . . if you are ready for it.

With this post and it’s remarkable opportunity, I’ll prove that to you and show you how to . . . either get started (finally) or how to dramatically improve your success and wealth by helping people save and earn on essential services.

You may be busy right now.  You may have been ‘burnt’ by somebody’s else’s offer of teaching you how to ‘get rich’ . . . . After all, the fact that you’re reading this material in the first place would suggest that you’ve tried several opportunities before, probably from a number of sources. I must stress to you . . . this is not a ‘Get-Rich-Quick Scheme’. I’m offering you the chance to be one of the select few people that can make a difference in your life and other people’s lives.

Two thirds of my life is undoubtedly just like yours, I live in the real world, not in fantasy or ‘la la’  land.

YOU know how easy it is to try an opportunity  and then let it go. You get more excited than a person who has just won ‘GOLD LOTTO’ only to find out later, after the adrenalin rush is over, that it’s a lot harder than the ‘Sales Pitch’ said it would be. This is just not fair.

Now I’m not saying for one minute that you can not make money from any other opportunity  . . . in fact many people do make serious money, however getting your hands on any money making tools is one thing . . .teaching you, holding your hand every step of the way is another.
From the day you become an Independent Marketing Rep, to the day you reach Senior Vice President  . . . my team and I are there to support you and mentor you throughout the entire process, providing you with our expertise, our time, our knowledge to help you create a residual wealth generating  business !

You may be tempted to delete this out unread. But a wise person investigates what fools take for granted.

If the thought of getting wealthy doesn’t fit within your paradigms or even offends you, it might be a good idea to delete this information straight in the trash folder and retreat to your safety zone, watch your life pass by as you wait for that big superannuation pay-out (minus all the taxes of course) and become one of the 95% of people who are unsuccessful.

But, if you truly are sick and tired of flogging yourself closer and closer to an early grave, in your current business, or worse still in service to someone who pay’s you a pittance for your blood, sweat and tears, or you simply want to create wealth and buy back your life, then welcome to what I promise will be one of the most truthful, blunt, practical and insightful opportunity to what it takes to become wealthy and to ‘Retire Sooner’!

The ball is in your court – if you are ready for a change or to make a difference  in your life or someone else’s click below to get started.

How to overcome negative vibes among your staff?

If you are a Supervisor or Manager this article may prove helpful.

Overcoming ‘negative vibes’ among your staff: 10 tips

in HUMAN RESOURCES,OFFICE MANAGEMENT,VIDEOS

Every HR pro and manager has to deal with a certain amount of pessimistic, hostile or uncooperative behavior at times. It’s just part of the workplace. But a hard-core negative attitude that starts with just one employee can quickly infect an entire department (or sometimes a whole company) if you don’t rein it in quickly. The ugly result: A workplace that’s rife with backstabbing, gossiping and rebellious employees. Cal Butera, the editor of Business Management Daily’s Office Manager Today and Manager’s Legal Bulletinnewsletters, provides the top 10 tips for confronting employees whose negative behavior has begun to affect co-workers and the company.

1. Don’t get drawn into the employees’ negative mind-set. Listen to their points, but don’t temper your own realistic optimism.

2. Avoid getting into an argument. Negative people thrive on the negative energy of arguments. Point out areas of agreement when possible in order to build rapport. Keep your cool.

3. Set standards. Spell out the consequences of negative behavior, such as decreased morale. Base them on behavior, not attitude. For example, you may not be able to change the fact that an employee doesn’t like a certain company policy. But you can discipline employees if they don’t follow the policy or are insubordinate in gossiping about it.

4. Ask questions. Force the employee to be specific about what is creating his or her negative thoughts and actions.

5. Try role-playing. Ask the employee to put himself in your shoes and pretend he has been asked to resolve the problem. That way, you will have the employee contribute his ideas for the best possible solutions. Involving the employee may also lead to more positive feelings about the solution or outcome since he or she had a hand in creating it.

6. Listen carefully. Use active listening to ensure that you’re understanding the employee correctly.

7. Don’t lower your expectations of the employee. A negative attitude doesn’t necessarily mean a poor performer.

8. Empower employees. Stop the “victim” mentality from forming. Allow employees to take responsibility for “good” events, so they can make them happen again, and for the “bad” events, so they have the power to change them in the future.

9. Solicit feedback. Always ask for employees’ opinions before making major decisions that will affect them. The more you listen to employees, and take an active interest in their concerns, the less likely they will be to complain to each other.

10. Hire right. Identify negative people before they’re hired. During the interview, listen for feelings that “life isn’t fair” in response to questions like: Have you ever felt you’ve been treated unfairly in the past? What were your chief concerns about management in your previous jobs? and What would you have changed if you were the manager at your last job?

Along with those 10 tips, here are four things you should NEVER do in your effort to stop negativity from wrecking your workplace:

1. Don’t shower negativists with a lot of attention. You’re only rewarding bad behavior.

2. Don’t stop asking them to pitch in and do tasks outside their normal job descriptions. Otherwise, you’re also punishing positive (or less vocal) employees.

3. Don’t correct them less often in order to avoid dealing with the attitude. Employees can’t be expected to change for the better if they’re not asked to.

4. Don’t allow employees to get bored or complacent. A negative attitude develops easily when there’s “nothing to look forward to.”

5 Steps to a Heart-Healthy Diet
from HealthyWomen.org’s Heart Health Center

If you’re not already taking good care of your heart, now’s the time to start. Heart disease is the No. 1 killer among women and men in the United States. Many risk factors increase your chances of developing heart disease, including high blood pressure, high cholesterol, diabetes and being overweight.

Luckily, one of the best ways to protect your heart and reduce your risk is by eating a heart-healthy diet. Here are five steps to get you on the right track.

1. Load up on fruits, vegetables and whole grains.
These three factors are the keys to a heart-healthy diet. Balance your meals with a mix of these high-fiber foods, and feel free to include legumes and nuts as well. Fiber helps regulate blood pressure and keeps you feeling full longer. Aim for 4 1/2 cups of fruits and veggies a day and at least 3 ounces of whole grains.

2. Watch unhealthy fat and cholesterol.
Limiting the amount of saturated and trans fats you eat can help you lower your cholesterol levels and reduce your risk of coronary artery disease. Choose healthy fats like those found in olive oil, canola oil and trans fat-free margarine instead of the ones in butter, creamy sauces, hydrogenated margarine and shortening. Look for monounsaturated fats and polyunsaturated fats, like the ones found in healthy oils, nuts, seeds, soy (tofu) and seafood.

3. Reduce your sodium intake.
Too much sodium can result in high blood pressure. Start by reducing the amount of salt you use as a seasoning when you cook, then begin paying attention to how much sodium is in the prepared foods you eat, like canned soup. You shouldn’t get more than 1,500 milligrams a day.

4. Go with low-fat protein.
Protein is an important part of your diet, but some types are better than others. Stay away from full-fat dairy products, egg yolks, fatty meats and cold cuts. Instead, opt for low-fat dairy, egg whites, lean meat, poultry, fish and legumes. Try starting a Meatless Monday tradition with your family and substitute plant protein for animal protein to reduce your fat and cholesterol intake.

5. Make a meal schedule.
Knowing what to eat and what to avoid is just the beginning of maintaining a heart-healthy diet. To ensure that you stick to the plan, create a meal schedule for your household once a week. Choose heart-healthy recipes and add the ingredients you need to buy to your shopping list. This not only can help ensure a healthy diet, but it could also lower your grocery bills.
