5 Steps to a Heart-Healthy Diet

5 Steps to a Heart-Healthy Diet
from HealthyWomen.org’s Heart Health Center

If you’re not already taking good care of your heart, now’s the time to start. Heart disease is the No. 1 killer among women and men in the United States. Many risk factors increase your chances of developing heart disease, including high blood pressure, high cholesterol, diabetes and being overweight.

Luckily, one of the best ways to protect your heart and reduce your risk is by eating a heart-healthy diet. Here are five steps to get you on the right track.

1. Load up on fruits, vegetables and whole grains.
These three factors are the keys to a heart-healthy diet. Balance your meals with a mix of these high-fiber foods, and feel free to include legumes and nuts as well. Fiber helps regulate blood pressure and keeps you feeling full longer. Aim for 4 1/2 cups of fruits and veggies a day and at least 3 ounces of whole grains.

2. Watch unhealthy fat and cholesterol.
Limiting the amount of saturated and trans fats you eat can help you lower your cholesterol levels and reduce your risk of coronary artery disease. Choose healthy fats like those found in olive oil, canola oil and trans fat-free margarine instead of the ones in butter, creamy sauces, hydrogenated margarine and shortening. Look for monounsaturated fats and polyunsaturated fats, like the ones found in healthy oils, nuts, seeds, soy (tofu) and seafood.

3. Reduce your sodium intake.
Too much sodium can result in high blood pressure. Start by reducing the amount of salt you use as a seasoning when you cook, then begin paying attention to how much sodium is in the prepared foods you eat, like canned soup. You shouldn’t get more than 1,500 milligrams a day.

4. Go with low-fat protein.
Protein is an important part of your diet, but some types are better than others. Stay away from full-fat dairy products, egg yolks, fatty meats and cold cuts. Instead, opt for low-fat dairy, egg whites, lean meat, poultry, fish and legumes. Try starting a Meatless Monday tradition with your family and substitute plant protein for animal protein to reduce your fat and cholesterol intake.

5. Make a meal schedule.
Knowing what to eat and what to avoid is just the beginning of maintaining a heart-healthy diet. To ensure that you stick to the plan, create a meal schedule for your household once a week. Choose heart-healthy recipes and add the ingredients you need to buy to your shopping list. This not only can help ensure a healthy diet, but it could also lower your grocery bills.

Best and Worst Exercises for a Cold

Best and Worst Exercises for a Cold
from HealthyWomen.org’s Flu and Cold Health Center

Cold and flu season is almost upon us, and while there are preventive measures we can take to avoid getting sick, sometimes we just get unlucky. If you find yourself sick with a cold, you may wonder how easy you’re supposed to take it. Should you just rest on the couch or is it OK to work out when you’re all stuffy?

Most health care providers agree that if your symptoms are limited to the area above your neck, it’s generally fine to break a sweat, if you feel up to it. But if your body feels achy or you have a fever or are really congested, it might be better to get some rest.

Once you feel good enough to head outside or to the gym, here are the best and worst exercises to do with a cold.

Best: Walking

Worst: Endurance running

Taking a 20- or 30-minute walk several times a week is a great way to stay in shape. It can even ease the symptoms of your cold by allowing you to open up your breathing passages as you inhale. On the other hand, avoid long-distance endurance running when you have a cold, because studies have shown that your immune system function can be compromised for up to a day afterward.

Best: Yoga

Worst: Weight lifting

Yoga can help you reduce your stress levels, which are usually elevated when you’re fighting a cold. The gentle stretching involved in the poses can also help relieve aches and pains. Weight lifting, however, isn’t the best idea, because your strength and focus will likely be diminished, increasing your risk of injury. Lifting weights can also put extra strain on your muscles, which can make sinus pressure and headaches worse.

Best: Dancing

Worst: Team sports

Whether you take a dance class like Zumba or just jam to your favorite playlist at home, dancing is a good way to get your heart pumping and reduce stress without putting much strain on your body. And while you may feel obligated to participate in team sports like soccer or softball, you’re better off sitting on the bench while you’re sick. Having physical contact with others can increase the risk of spreading the cold. Your teammates might miss you out there, but they’ll be glad you’re not passing your illness on to them!

As long as you feel comfortable working out and you’re not exposing others to your cold, you should be fine doing moderate exercise. If you have questions about a specific routine or think something may be out of the ordinary with your symptoms, don’t hesitate to contact your health care provider.

Ganoderma and your Health

Everywhere we turn there is information about healthy living. Sometimes all you need to do is change your brand of food, in this case coffee/tea or hot chocolate.

Nanobitoteresearch had the following to say about the benefits of Ganoderma on your health so I thought I would share it.

“For the Nerves:

Ganoderma Lucidum have been traditionally recommended by Chinese and Japanese herbalists for insomnia due to their “sleep-promoting factor”. Long-term use causes a significant promotion of slow wave sleep. Ganoderma Lucidum are prescribed in China for a number of psychiatric and neurological afflictions, including diseases involving the muscles, anorexia, and debility following lengthy illnesses.

In Japan, the dried “mycelium” of Ganoderma Lucidum the root-like body that produces mushrooms has been found to be highly effective in the treatment of neuroses caused by “environmental stress”. In addition, in an eight-month study of Alzheimer’s disease, patients taking a Reishi mycelium product demonstrated significant improvement.
In China, Ganoderma Lucidum is used for its muscle relaxing and analgesic (pain-inhibiting) effects. In one study, Ganoderma Lucidum alleviated anxiety in 18 of 20 patients after four months’ use. It was concluded that the mushroom has an essentially “calmative function”, but is neither a narcotic nor a hypnotic.

Immune System:

Slow down your aging:

Ganoderma Lucidum also contains Polysaccharides helps in the promotion and the adjustment immunity function, improve vitality, enhancement disease-resistant ability, guarantees its health growth. In addition, Ganoderma Lucidum can also help regulate metabolic balance, and promote the synthesis of nucleic acids , proteins and anti-free radical. Ganoderma lucidum’s polysaccharides can significantly promote the nuclear DNA synthesis, and increased cell division , thus delaying the aging body. Certain researchers discovered that Ganoderma Lucidum contains several active components which are proven to strengthen our immunity cells and improve our immune system. They are high concentration of Organic Germanium, Polysaccharides and Triterpenes.

Cardiotonic:

Researchers in China and Japan found that Ganoderma Lucidum contains ganoderic acids which belong to a group of natural substances called “triterpenes” . These active components in Ganoderma Lucidum improved the blood flow, lowered oxygen consumption in the heart muscle, lower cholesterol and inhibit platelet aggregation which can lead to heart attacks and other circulation problems. They also found that in addition to all the cardiovascular benefits mentioned above, Ganoderma Lucidum showed a significant preventive and therapeutic action against plaque build-up. “Plaque” is a fatty goo which is comprised of a combination of oxidized cholesterol, calcium, and degenerated white blood cells . It is deposited on the walls of arteries which restricts blood flow by narrowing the passage within arteries resulting in atherosclerosis.

Anti-Cancer:

Studies of Ganoderma Lucidum in cancer research have been largely conducted in Japan, where Ganoderma Lucidum was scientifically proven to have an anti-tumor effect. This research has continued in Korea, Japan and China. The active anti-cancer constituents in Ganoderma Lucidum are called Beta-D-glucan. Beta-D-glucan is a polysaccharide basically a huge sugar molecule made up of many little sugar molecules chained together bound to amino acids. These intricate sugars stimulate or modulate the immune system by activating immune cells such as macrophage and helper T-cells, as well as increase the immunoglobin levels (immunoglobins are specific types of antibodies) to produce a heightened response to foreign cells, whether bacteria, viruses, or tumor cells.

Anti-Allergic /Anti-Inflammatory Actions:

During the 1970s and 1980s, Ganoderma Lucidum’s anti-allergy action became the subject of ongoing research in both China and Japan. Studies showed that Ganoderma Lucidum extract significantly inhibited difference types of allergic reactions, including positive effects against asthma and contact dermatitis. In 1990, researchers at the University of Texas Health Science Center in San Antonio found that Ganoderma Lucidum could be effectively used in treating stiff necks, stiff shoulders, conjunctivitis (inflammation of the fine membrane lining the eye and eyelids), bronchitis, rheumatism, and improving “competence” of the immune system without any significant side-effects.

Healing the Liver:

Ganoderma lucidum have the protective effect on the liver damage which caused by variety of physical, chemical and biological factors. It can effectively protect the liver and reducing liver damage. Beside that, Ganoderma lucidum is commonly prescribed in China for the treatment of chronic hepatitis. In treatments lasting 2 to 15 weeks, the overall rate of efficiency was 70.7 to 98.0%. In Japan, Ganoderma Lucidum extract has been reported to be effective in treating patients with liver failure. In animal studies of mice with carbon tetrachloride-induced hepatitis, the extent of liver damage was significantly inhibited by continuous dosing with Ganoderma Lucidum tincture, and the regeneration of the liver was promoted.

Detoxify and energize your body:

Ganoderma can also eliminate toxins accumulated in your body through intake of various western medication, antibiotic, pain killers and anti inflammatory medicines. It thus achieves a strong detoxification effect to maintain your body balance. The Organic Germanium in Ganoderma helps to enhance your blood stream ability to take in oxygen by more than 1.5 times. It also increases your metabolism rate and slows down your aging.

Cure for Kidney Disease:

Kidney disease is one of the most difficult diseases to cure. They include acute or chronic nephritis, diabetic renal syndrome, nephrosis and rheumatic fever. These may due in part to high cholesterol count and high blood sugar level. If kidneys are overloaded and blood cannot reach renal capillaries, nephrosis results, with edema, urine retention, fatigue and possibly serious uremia. In addition, Ganoderma Lucidum could not only lower proteinuria and cholesterolemia, but could maintain renal proper function.

In 1990, researchers at the University of Texas Health Science Center in San Antonio found that Ganoderma Lucidum could be effectively used in treating stiff necks, stiff shoulders, conjunctivitis (inflammation of the fine membrane lining the eye and eyelids), bronchitis, rheumatism, and improving “competence” of the immune system without any significant side-effects.”

If Ganoderma can do all this and you can get it in coffee/tea isn’t it time to change your brand of coffee or tea to a healthier brand?

If you would like to learn more about how changing your brand of coffee or tea can help use the green box on your right.

Do you wear High Heels to work?

Do you wear highheels to work?

I love wearing highheels; there is just something about them that lifts your self-esteem. Now that I see the height of the heels that are in fashion, I think I will stick to the two inch or shorter heels.

It is so interesting that some women appear to sacrifice their health to wearing highheels. When you look at them you know that they are having problems walking in the heels. They prefer to look good and of course sexy legs in a pair of sexy heels always get a second gaze.

On one of my visits to a Bank I had the opportunity to wait in the lobby on the ground floor. You need to climb approximately ten or twelve stairs from the first floor to get to the ground floor.

I was quite amazed to see the number of women who were wearing highheels like the one above to work. These are much more than two inches high. They were quite focus on their walk, and this is understandable, since naturally if they walk too fast there is a chance that they may hurt themselves. I can only imagine their productivity level on the job.

As I continue to observe them walking slowly by I realize that they are already hurting themselves and they did not appear to be too concerned. Imagine being on your feet for seven to eight hours in these highheels.

The amount of pressure we put on the muscles in our calves when we wear the highheels is something we should be concerned about. Research has shown that excessive wearing of highheels results in knee, back and neck problems and long term issues like osteoarthritis. So we suffer for style – sexy legs with sexy shoes.

Here are a few suggestions that may help:

– Avoid wearing very high heels to work, keep them for your social events.

– If you have to wear highheels to work try to rest your legs at intervals. Keep a small stool or box under your desk and remove the shoes and rest your legs.

– You can also use a lower heel to walk around the office.

– Walk about three times a week in your flats for a minimum of thirty minutes.

– Engage in yoga or some stretching exercises so that your frame will be flexible enough to break any fall.
– Massage your legs after removing your heels.

– When you are purchasing your heels ensure that the shoes are not too tight or too big.

– If you are overweight then take action to reduce your weight now. A great way to lose the excess weight is to use a chewable tablet. Trimulean offers you just that – nothing to mix. Fits in your purse and is taken half an hour before meals.
Order a box of trimulean here: title=”http://www.trimulean.com/teamtrini3″>

Not interested in tablets then organic green tea or coffee has also proven to be helpful in losing the extra pounds, and you drink coffee or tea in any case, so you are just changing your brand to a healthier one.
Order your tea or coffee from organogold here:

– Be sure to consume adequate calcium enriched foods to keep your bones strong and healthy. You can also stock up on these calcium enriched foods for use in the office.

Is the coffee business expanding or are we now more aware of the coffee industry?

I do not know if you realize that Starbucks is now in India. They are all over the world and all the other fast food businesses are now offering coffee as part of their breakfast menu. It is as though the coffee business has expanded overnight and each cup of coffee is money in hand.

Just from seeing Starbucks offering a reward card and you can even get a $5 gift card, you have to know that there is some competition when it comes to including a cup of coffee in your menu.

Imagine if we were getting paid for each cup of coffee purchased by all those people we told about Starbucks or Mc Café or Dunkin Donuts coffee? You would have a profitable work at home business and you would be running all the way to the bank. All credit cards would be settled; as a matter of fact you would now have a debit card with money loaded on it. You would certainly have the new house and what about that car you have been checking out in the showroom?

The next company that is expanding its coffee offerings rapidly via a work at home program is organogold. Organogold has recently entered Japan and Russia. Who do you know in these places? You can rake in some good referral income from each cup of coffee they drink and you do not even have to be there. The list below shows the other countries organogold is in. Best of all everyone who is with organogold and spreads the word about organogold products like their coffee and tea are rewarded with cash.

Yes cash! This has become a tried and true work at home business.

The other interesting point with organogold is that this is not just coffee or tea blends this is the healthy stuff. The content of the various products have been developed to produce a great tasting coffee/tea or hot chocolate with healthy and wealthy benefits.
Review for yourself here: ://www.justhealthy.organogold.com

Are you going to settle for a $5 gift card or from $20 to $150 per referral? This is in addition to the other member benefits. You got to wake up and start getting paid for each cup of coffee that you refer.
Would love to hear your comments.

Using Foods to fight depression

This is the final part of my article ‘Depression and Life experiences’.

Using Foods to fight depression

When people are depressed the sadness and hopelessness feelings etc that they get are sometimes caused by the reduction of mood controlling molecules (serotonin, dopamine and norepinephrine). These are called neurotransmitters and they are responsible for controlling the thoughts and emotions in our brain. While therapy helps in facing the painful issues and exploring ways to overcome them thereby altering the level of neurotransmitters in the brain, the body also needs adequate supply of amino acids, vitamins and other nutrients to produce these neurotransmitters.

The following are some foods that are known for helping the body during a state of depression:

Complex carbohydrates

Increase your intake of carbs. They boost your energy and improve your serotonin level which controls the feeling good mood. Instead of sweets use whole grains, e.g brown rice, and cereal also peas, beans and vegetables. Sweets increase your blood sugar whereas carbs are digested slowly and stabilizes your energy level. Fluctuations in your blood sugar levels also cause depression.

Lean Meats

Lean meats contain the amino acid referred to as tyrosine, which increases the levels of norepinephrine and dopamine in the brain. These two brain chemicals are responsible for helping you feel more alert and focused. If you are depressed it makes sense to include more lean beef, skinless chicken, turkey etc. in your diet.

Fight depression with Omega-3

Salmon, mackerel and sardines, and other fatty fish containing omega- 3 fatty acids are known for improving mood and memory.

Dark Leafy Green Vegetables

Increase your intake of dark green vegetables such as spinach and romaine lettuce. These contain folate which is a nutrient that may help lower your risk of depression.

Dark Chocolate

If you are a chocolate lover now is the time to increase your intake of dark chocolate. Dark chocolate is known to improve your mood during depression.

In addition to foods you may consider increasing your intake of sunlight. Sunlight helps fight depression – it improves your mood and energy level.
Aerobic exercise – walking, running etc also puts our body in a good mood.

Are you ready to put away your eyeglasses?

Are you ready to improve your eyesight and throw away those old eyeglasses?

I am 52 years young and have been wearing eyeglasses for 30 years. I am also hypertensive and on medication. I started using the Organo Gold product line – I tried their black coffee, cafe latte, mocha, king of coffee for about six months ago. Within the past month my eyes have been hurting more with the eyeglasses on than off. I finally said what the heck and shelved the eyeglasses. Since then my eyesight continue to improve daily even seeing things that I would not normally make out with my eyeglasses. Also when I drink either the black coffee or king of coffee and I check my pressure I do not need to take my blood pressure medication and I feel so calm and relax. I plan on taking the products even more consistently than before and look forward to continued great results. Gerard. Trinidad

This is Gerard’s eyeglasses.

There are many products on the market about improving your eyesight. Some indicate that you can do exercises to improve your eyesight because all you need to do is relax the eye muscles by removing tension and rigidity. Others provide laser treatment or various types of surgery.

Whatever the solution, on the job you need good eyesight. Now most of the tasks on the job involves the use of a computer, so you are practically looking at the computer screen all day. You have your emails, your presentations, your spreadsheets etc.

If you do not take care of your eyes you will soon start having blurred vision, tension and headaches. That’s not all. When driving you fail to see little things which cause accidents.

On the job you start making mistakes. I am sure you know the consequences when you record an incorrect amount on a customer’s account or invoice, or you write an email or client letter and there are mistakes which you just did not see.

If you wear eyeglasses, the day you forget them at home is disaster day. Do you remember the time when you were late for work because you could not find the eyeglasses or when you were at your desk looking all over when it was perched neatly on your head?

What about your contact lens – have they ever fell while trying to put them in your eyes and you cannot find them. Do you remember seeing your self on the floor with your finger tips feeling the floor and yelling to people in the office or at home – do not walk there, my lens fell.

Recently I was talking to a friend of mine who is now able to see more clearly and with less effort. He has actually stopped using his eyeglasses, the one in the picture above.
The testimony above explains how he improved his eyesight. I also recall that another friend indicated, when she started using this product she felt as if sand grains were removed from her eyes.

According to my friend, if you have vision problems and headaches, tension, and fatigue related to strained vision you may be able to get relief from this just by changing your brand of coffee or tea.

On the job your presentation and graph colours will be brighter and more vivid and the words on the computer monitor will sharpen into focus.

Even street signs and traffic lights will be clearer.

How do you gain this clarity and improved eyesight?

Simply change your brand of coffee or tea and start drinking coffee or tea with ganoderma. You drink coffee and tea anyhow so there is no excuse for not trying it.

See for yourself! Try a box!
